George Fields, from Waterbury, CT, was the regular third baseman for the 1872 Middletown Mansfields. He was 18 at the time but not the youngest player on the team.
Fields was the weakest hitter among the regulars, with a .241 average on a team which hit .288.
He had previously played shortstop for Mansfield in 1870 when it was an amateur team.
