George Elder was in 41 games with the 1949 St. Louis Browns, although he appeared only 10 times in the field. All his appearances were in the second half of the season.
George was born in Lebanon, KY, but attended college in big cities on the two coasts. He was at Fordham University in 1941-43, and UCLA in 1946-47. Through 2010, the only other major leaguer born in Lebanon, KY has been John Grim.
After college, George was 26 when he began play in the minors with Toledo, for whom he hit .312.
