[edit] Biographical Information

Catcher George Yankowski was signed as an amateur free agent by the Philadelphia Athletics during the 1942 season. He appeared in six games with the Athletics before being inducted into the United States Army where he spent the next three seasons during World War II.

George was released by the Athletics on April 23, 1946 and spent the rest of his professional baseball career in the Chicago White Sox organization. George spent most of the following four years (1946-1949) in the minors. He received one more chance in the big leagues at the start of the 1949 season with the White Sox, appearing in 18 games, hitting just .167 and would finish out his shortened career with the Memphis Chickasaws of the Southern Association, hitting .209 in 33 games.

George left the game after the 1949 season, having chalked up a .161 batting average in 18 games, during his major league time. His four seasons (1946-1949) of minor league numbers where nothing to be ashamed of nor nothing astounding, hitting at a .268 clip with 17 home runs and appearing in 390 games.

As of this writing (2010), Yankowski was retired in his native home of Cambridge, MA.
