[edit] Biographical Information
Outfielder George Case is the most famous of the major leaguers named after President Washington. Case spent most of his career with the Washington Senators, and led the league in stolen bases six times during his career. He also had batting averages in the top ten during the wartime years.
In 1946 his speed was matched up against that of Jesse Owens in a race. Both were perhaps a bit past their prime at the time. Owens beat Case by a small margin.
After his playing days ended, he coached at Rutgers University from 1950-60, he was a Washington Senators coach from 1961 to 1963 and a member of the Minnesota Twins coaching staff in 1968, as first base coach.
