Gene Steere played 10 games for the 1894 Pittsburgh Pirates. Born in Rhode Island, he had attended Brown University at the same time as a number of other future major leaguers, including Fred Tenney.
Sporting Life of Sept. 5, 1896 says that Steere recommended the youngster Nap Lajoie as a good man to the Fall River manager. Both Steere and Lajoie were from Rhode Island, with Steere a couple years older.
