"The stars of the season of 1896 were few, but among them were Gene DeMontreville and pitcher Payne, both of whom were rated (not good enough) for Syracuse. Well, we can't always guess correct." - Sporting Life's Syracuse correspondent, pointing out that both Gene DeMontreville and Harley Payne made good in the majors in 1896
A surprise about Gene DeMontreville is that similarity scores through 2006 shows one of the most similar players to him is a current player, David Eckstein. Both were infielders, both had adequate but not great hitting stats, both could steal a base. Eckstein is short by modern standards while DeMontreville stood 5' 8".
Gene's brother Lee DeMontreville also played in the majors. Gene played 17 years in the minors and also managed at least a couple times. Gene and Lee never played on the same professional team, however.
He spent part of 1899 with the Baltimore Orioles, the first team that John McGraw managed.
At the time of his death he was concession manager of the Mid-South Fairgrounds in Memphis, TN.
