Gary Green was signed as a 1st round pick in the 1984 amateur draft by the San Diego Padres and scouting director Sandy Johnson.

Green is currently (since 2007) the manager of the Hickory Crawdads and is the son of former big league pitcher Fred Green. Green was the manager of the Lynchburg Hillcats in 2006, the Lakeland Tigers from 2002 to 2004, the Oneonta Tigers in 2000-2001, and the GCL Tigers in 1999. Green was a coach in the Tigers' chain in 1997-1998.
