Gary Wagner pitched 6 seasons in the majors. He appeared in 162 games, mostly in relief.

Gary was born in Bridgeport, IL in east-central Illinois near the Indiana border. He attended Eastern Illinois University, about 80 miles away from Bridgeport. His time at Eastern overlapped with that of Bart Zeller and Marty Pattin.

Wagner played 8 seasons in the minors, with a record of 65-53. In 1967 he went 12-4 for San Diego, while in 1969 he was 11-5 for Eugene. Veterans Jim Gentile and Ed Roebuck were teammates at San Diego, and John Boozer was a teammate on both teams.

In the majors, Gary had 7 saves as a rookie in 1965, 8 saves in 1968, and 7 saves in his last major league season in 1970. Although he was also up in 1966-67 and 1969, he had no saves in those seasons and had fewer appearances. His peak in appearances was 59, in his rookie year with the 1965 Phillies. On the Phillies, he was two years older than teammate Dick Allen.
