The Fresno Cardinals, owned by the St. Louis Cardinals, began play in 1941 as one of the original members of the California League. The league ceased operations in 1942 due to World War II, but the Cardinals returned in 1946 when play resumed. The club won league pennants in 1948, 1952, and 1955. After the 1956 season, St. Louis sold the team to local owners, and they changed their name to the Fresno Sun Sox.
