Freddy Asiel Álvarez was 11-12 with a 4.41 ERA in his first three seasons for Villa Clara in the Cuban Serie Nacional. In 2008-2009, the youngster stepped up, going 7-2 with a 3.40 ERA and helping his team to a second-place finish. He was 5th in the league in winning percentage and 10th in ERA. Álvarez was then put on Cuba's team for the 2009 World Port Tournament, going 1-0 with a 3.65 ERA; one negative was six walks to four strikeouts in 12 1/3 IP.
