"Few men rise in baseball from the player end of the game." - Tim Murnane, about Doe's move into the executive ranks
Fred Doe got into two games in the Players League. He also had a long career as a player and manager in the New England League.
He is (as of 2008) the only major leaguer whose last name is Doe, although Doe Boyland has it as a first name.
SABR has a biography of him. He also played roller polo professionally, a sport which was big in his time. He worked in virtually all roles in baseball, from playing to managing to the front office to owning several minor league teams. He was a major force in getting Sunday baseball legalized in Massachusetts and also worked in insurance.
