Fred Corey was a two-way player in the majors who appeared seven seasons, in six of which he pitched. His major league debut was as the starter in the season opener of the 1878 Providence Grays.
He didn't last long with the Grays, partly because of arm trouble early in the season.
Corey had his best year with the bat with the 1884 Philadelphia Athletics. In 1884, he did not pitch at all, playing exclusively at third base. He hit .276 with 16 triples (the league average that year was .240).
As a pitcher, his 2.43 ERA with the 1880 Worcester Ruby Legs was ninth-best in the 1880 National League. Later, with the 1883 Philadelphia Athletics, he went 10-7 on a pennant-winning team.
Corey played every position on the diamond, appearing in 237 games at third base, 93 at pitcher, 46 in right field, 38 at shortstop, 29 in center field, 11 at second base, 8 in left field, 7 at first base and 1 at catcher.
Corey, who was born and died in Rhode Island, also played for the Rhode Island entry in the New England League in 1877.
He managed the team in Hastings, NE for part of the 1887 season.
When Charley Radbourn lost an eye in a hunting accident, Sporting Life in 1894 recalled that Fred Corey's career had ended due to a similar accident. In 1912 it was reported that he was asphyxiated by gas fumes while staying at a hotel in Providence, RI.
