Tennessee native Fred Archer spent ten active seasons in professional baseball from 1934 to 1946.
The left-hander spent two short runs in the major leagues with the Philadelphia Athletics. Fred debuted with the Athletics on September 5, 1936 . That season, he appeared in six games, winning two and losing three, with a 6.35 ERA. Fred was back with the Athletics in 1937, went to the mound in one game, pitched three innings with a no-decision and his big league career came to an end on September 9, 1937.
Archer took up residence in the minor leagues, where he would be through 1946, winning 57 times but losing 84 while pitching 1,104 innings in 245 appearances. Fred had one good season down under, when he went 17-11 with a 3.06 ERA in 29 appearances, in the class B Interstate League with the Hazleton Mountaineers and the Lancaster Red Roses in 1940. During his time in baseball this was Archer's only season above the .500 mark.
Archer left the game after the 1946 season and went to work as a textile worker in Charlotte, NC. He was on the job until his retirement and passed away at the Charlotte Memorial Hospital at the age of 71 on October 31, 1981.
