[edit] Biographical Information

"Fred Mann, a member of the Columbus team of '84-5, is now captain of the Columbus team, and is getting good work out of them." - from Sporting Life of September 19, 1888

Since Fred Mann was the first major leaguer born in Vermont, he is featured in books such as The Vermont Encyclopedia and mentioned by the Vermont Historical Society. He played mostly, while in the majors, in the American Association, and had his best year with the bat in 1884, when he was among the leaders in several categories.

"Fred Mann has caught on in great shape and has made for himself a host of friend by his earnestness in doing his duty and hustling to make his club win, not matter what the odds may be." - Sporting Life of June 6, 1888
