"The local management (Lancaster) has decided to pay the financial claim that Toronto holds over Fred Crolius, so that the star fielder, who stood second in the league in hitting last year, may again be on the Red Roses' roster." - from the Sporting Life issue of March 9, 1907
Fred Crolius was the first player from Tufts University to come to the major leagues. He was at Tufts in 1894, and at Dartmouth College in 1896-99. He also played college football and later participated in professional football.
Crolius was the fourth outfielder on the 1901 Beaneaters, playing mostly right field where he backed up Jimmy Slagle.
Sporting Life reported in 1902 that Crolius was thinking of leaving baseball and utilizing his engineering education by working for a steel firm in Ohio.
Crolius was the coach at Villanova University in 1905-1911. He also managed a number of clubs in the minors.
