[edit] Biographical Information
Frank McLaughlin, from Lowell, MA, broke in with Worcester, forty miles away from Lowell. In his three years in the majors, he was in three leagues and played seven different positions.
McLaughlin pitched in a few games. He also appeared as pitcher in a game on May 3, 1883, when the umpire took ill but the teams wanted to put on a game for the 1,200 fans in the stands. A spectator was chosen as umpire and Frank was the pitcher (the other team used outfielder Lon Knight as their pitcher) for an exhibition game.
Frank's brother Barney also played three years in the big leagues, and also appeared both as a pitcher and as a position player. Barney was born in Ireland a year after his brother was born in Lowell, but both Frank and Barney died in Lowell.
