Gleich had played for Saginaw in most of 1919 before making his major league debut in the middle of September 1919. He played in five games for the 1919 Yankees, making a good enough impression that he returned in 1920. One source says Gleich was the lead-off man on the day Ruth first played as a Yankee.
Gleich served in the Army from 1917-19.
While with the Yankees in 1920, he was involved in a famous car accident while Ruth was driving. One newspaper headlined that Ruth had died, but nobody in the car was seriously hurt.
