[edit] Biographical Information
Frank Buttery, of Connecticut, played for the 1872 Middletown Mansfields.
Buttery was, according to the book Orator O'Rourke: The Life of a Baseball Radical, on the Stratford Osceolas, the 1871 champions of the state of Connecticut. The book identifies him as the pitcher and from Norwalk. The book has a photo of the team. Buttery is said to have played the previous season for the Norwalk Libertys, and was college-educated. The book says he later became a minister although The Deadball Era states he was a grocer.
Buttery had a pitching record of 3-2 for the 1872 Mansfields even though the team record was 5-19. Frank's ERA was the best of the three pitchers on the team, although his batting average was below the team average.
