Frank Bowes was the most frequently utilized back-up on the 1890 Brooklyn Gladiators. He appeared in 61 games (with 240 plate appearances), playing at every single position except pitcher and second base. He was most frequently at catcher.
Bowes was born in Bath, NY, in upstate New York. In 1887 Sporting Life carried a note that he broke his arm while pitching a curve on behalf of the Flushing team.
He died at age 30 after being shot during a quarrel.
