Fernando Oda did not start playing baseball regularly until age 29, yet blossomed quickly. He was with the Brazilian national team by the 2002 Intercontinental Cup; he fared poorly in the event with 2 hits and a hit batsmen in five opponent plate appearances, yielding 2 runs in 1/3 of an inning.

Oda was with Brazil for the 2003 Pan American Games and 2003 Baseball World Cup; in the latter event, the southpaw was 0-1 with 5 hits, 3 walks and 6 runs in 3 innings. Only Marcel Vianna had a higher ERA for Brazil. In the 2005 Baseball World Cup, he allowed 4 runs (2 earned) in 3 2/3 IP.

Fernando gave up 8 hits but only one run in 4 1/3 IP in the 2006 Americas qualifiers for the 2008 Olympics. In the 2007 Pan American Games, he surrendered 5 hits, 2 walks, 2 home runs and 4 runs in two innings to tie Gilmar Pereira for Brazil's worst ERA; he was the only left-hander on their staff.
