Farm club
From BR Bullpen
A farm club or farm team is a minor league team that has an agreement with a major league team. When a major league team signs a player he is sent to a minor league team within the major league team's system. This player is said to be "down on the farm" as he is "growing" as a ballplayer. The collection of minor league clubs affiliated with a franchise is called a "farm system." A player sent to the minor leagues is said to be "farmed out."
Branch Rickey is credited with creating the farm system while with the St. Louis Cardinals.
