[edit] Biographical Information
Right-hander Evelio Hernandez was another in the long list of Cuban players signed by Washington Senators scout Joe Cambria. Evelio became the property of the Senators in an unknown transaction with the Roswell Rockets of the Longhorn League in July, 1954. Hernandez put together a 11-9 record with a 3.90 ERA in his split season debut in 1954 with the Roswell club and the Rock Hill Chiefs. Evelio threw a big year at the Longhorn League in 1955 when his 23 victories along with 227 strikeouts both led the league.
1956 was even better as he went 18-4 with a 2.46 ERA while pitching 205 innings for the Charlotte Hornets of the South Atlantic League. This got Evelio his call to the major leagues and Griffith Stadium and the 24 year old pitcher would have a 1-1 record, pitching in 18 games for the 1956 and 1957 Senators. This two year stint would wind up his run in the major leagues.
Hernandez would spend the rest of his pro baseball in the minors, winding it down in 1967 at age 35 with the Monterrey Sultanes of the Mexican League with eleven minor league seasons under his belt. Stats shown, show that Evelio had a 61-39 record with a 4.04 ERA in 370 appearances. As of last report Hernandez makes his residence in Miami, FL, where he has coached the baseball team at Loyola High School and also in youth baseball leagues in the city.
