[edit] Biographical Information
Boston Globe, September 1, 1907, page 7: headline, "Fred Clarke Laid Up. Dreyfuss Decides to call in Diehl, Cincinnati Councilman, who Plays for Fun".
The article reads, in part: "The Toledo management announced yesterday that Ernie Diehl, the amateur ball player, Cincinnati councilman and all-round sportsman, had consented to join the team in Indianapolis tomorrow. Diehl, who os too wealthy to adopt baseball as a profession, has helped out the Pittsburg [sic] club on a number of occasions, always refusing to accept a cent for his services, and promised that if Pres. Dreyfus [sic] ever needed him he would respond at once. It is this promise upon which Mr Dreyfus now depends." However, Diehl does not seem to have played for Pittsburgh in 1907. Interesting insight, though.
