Ernie "Lefty" Alten pitched 14 games for the 1920 Detroit Tigers, a team which was managed by Hughie Jennings and which featured Ty Cobb and Harry Heilmann. Alten and Heilmann were the same age.
Alten was in mid-career at the time, having started in the minors in 1914. He was primarily a pitcher in the minors, except that he played some outfield in 1924 and hit .297 for Nashville. As a comparison, Bevo LeBourveau hit .312 for the team while Dode Paskert, in his last pro year, hit .272 split among two teams in the league.
Alten won over 150 games in the minors.
