"Ernest Burch will prove a valuable man. Besides being a fine fielder and base runner, he is a safe, hard hitter, and will be just the man for left field . . ." - Sporting Life of January 27, 1886
Ernie Burch first appeared in the major leagues at the age of 27 with the 1884 Cleveland Blues as an outfielder in 32 games, hitting .210 on a team whose average was .237. Two years later, he was on the Brooklyn Grays as a regular outfielder hitting .261. The next year was his last, although he hit .293 in 49 games. His batting average was the same as the 22-year-old Adonis Terry, and only one point behind the team leader Germany Smith.
- Injured with a sprained knee in August 1866.
Before and after his major league days, Ernie played several seasons with Peoria.
