Eric Ireland pitched in the minor leagues from 1996 to 2003, mainly in the Houston Astros chain.
Ireland was drafted by the Astros in the 2nd round of the 1995 amateur draft and made his debut with the GCL Astros in 1996. Ireland reached AA in 2000 with the Astros' Texas League affiliate, the Round Rock Express.
On November 20, 2000, Ireland was traded by the Chicago Cubs to the Oakland Athletics for Matt Stairs. Ireland spent 2001 with the AAA Sacramento River Cats, then began 2002 with the independent league Long Beach Breakers. He returned to the Astros' chain in 2002 and 2003.
