He joined the Mexican Navy at the age of 16 and played on the baseball team there, where a coach switched him to pitching after noticing his strong accurate throws from the outfield. He pitched 11 seasons in the Mexican leagues. He pitched the Mexico City Reds to Mexican League championships in 1973, 1974 and 1976. Enrique won 20 games for the Mexico City Reds in 1976.
He was signed by the expansion Seattle Mariners and made his major league debut for the team in April 1977, pitching out of the bullpen. He was traded to the Pirates after the 1978 season in return for Odell Jones and joined Kent Tekulve and Grant Jackson to form an extremely effective relief trio for the Pirates in 1979.
