[edit] Biographical Information

"Sandy was a terrific little guy. Very quiet and very shy, always a smile on his face." - Don Drysdale

Sandy Amoros is best remembered for a fantastic catch in Game 7 of the 1955 World Series. In the sixth inning, he slid to catch Yogi Berra's slicing line drive near the left field foul line, turning a sure extra base hit into a double play, preserving the Brooklyn Dodgers' 2-0 lead.

Prior to reaching the majors, Amoros played for the New York Cubans in the Negro Leagues in 1950. In the 1950 Central American and Caribbean Games, Amoros led Cuba to a Gold Medal with 6 home runs in 7 games. After his playing career ended, he returned to his native Cuba. When Fidel Castro came to power, he moved to the United States, first to New York City and later to Miami. He lived in poverty for many years and lost a leg to diabetes in 1985. He died of pneumonia in 1992 at age 62.
