Edgar (EE) Smith is known as "EE" because of another Edgar Smith known as Edgar (AE) Smith who played in the majors in 1883. EE Smith was in the majors with four teams from 1883-85 and in 1890. Born in Providence, RI, he played for the Providence team in 1883 and 1885, as well as in 1886 when it was a minor league team.
His minor league career went to 1891.
Yale University's Geoff Zonder verified that Edgar Eugene Smith played baseball at Yale in the early 1880s. He left Yale in his junior year and, according to a Yale class book, "not long afterwards he was stricken with chronic mental derangement." He reportedly received treatment for that disorder, but died when only 30 years old. (This information was passed along to me from Ivy League sports historian Stephen Eschenbach.) [citation needed]
Edgar (AE) Smith was at Yale in 1882, and if the above information is correct, the two may have played on the same team. The NCAA baseball site lists them both as having been at Yale.
