Eddie Williams played for five years in the minor leagues.
He was picked by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2nd round of the 1991 amateur draft; the choise was compensation from the Atlanta Braves for the loss of Terry Pendleton to free agency. It was the 6th St. Louis pick thanks to other free agent loss compensation choices.
Williams debuted with the Johnson City Cardinals in 1991 and hit .314/~.429/.471. Baseball America rated him as the Cardinals' 7th-best prospect. Eddie failed to live up to that billing in 1992 when he only batted .194/~.256/.301 in 110 games for the Savannah Cardinals.
Williams hit .236/~.305/.319 for the 1993 Springfield Cardinals but was involved in a tragic incident on May 22. He had been driving a car carrying teammate Diego Ruiz when the car hit a steel pole and crashed into a liquor store. Ruiz died as a result. The police said that alcohol was involved but no charges were pressed.
After the tragic accident, Eddie returned to Savannah in 1994 and hit .226/.301/.275 in 92 games. He finished his career in 1995 with the Lakeland Tigers, going 4 for 15 with 7 total bases in four games.
