Born in Cuba, pitcher Eduardo Morlan emigrated with his family to Miami when he was 12 years old. He attended Coral Park High School and was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the third round of the 2004 amateur draft. He was signed by scout Hector Otero and made his pro debut that summer with the GCL Twins and was 1-2 with a 2.84 ERA in 11 games. He began 2005 with the Elizabethton Twins, going 2-0 with an 0.82 ERA in 4 starts before being promoted to the Beloit Snappers in July. He went 4-4 with a 4.38 ERA in 10 starts for Beloit.

Morlan spent 2006 back with the Snappers, going 5-5 with a 2.29 ERA in 28 outings and earning a spot on the Midwest League All-Star team. He spent most of the following year with the Fort Myers Miracle, where he became a full-time reliever and notched 18 saves. Late in the season, he was promoted to the AA New Britain Rock Cats, appearing in 2 games for the team.

Following the 2007, Morlan was traded along with Jason Bartlett and Matt Garza to the Tampa Bay Rays in the deal that brought Delmon Young to the Twins.
