[edit] Biographical Information

The son of Hall of Famer Eddie Collins, Eddie Collins attended Yale University from 1937-39, at a time when "Smoky" Joe Wood was the baseball coach. Smoky Joe's son Joe Wood, who eventually came briefly to the major leagues, also was a Yale player in 1939.

Collins played for the Philadelphia Athletics before serving in the Navy during World War II. After the war, he worked in the Philadelphia Phillies front office for almost a decade.

Collins broke into the majors at a young age, and given his age, his batting averages were low but not terrible. However, he had no power. He was done with the majors at the age of 25. He did get 219 at-bats for the 1941 Athletics, as the # 4 outfielder.

Collins Jr. only played two years in the minor leagues, hitting .293/~.352/.352 for the 1940 Baltimore Orioles and leading the International League with 21 stolen bases, and then .291/~.390/.314 for the Jersey City Giants and Buffalo Bisons in 1946.
