Ed White was a star athlete at the University of Alabama who was a running back in football and a 1950 All-American selection as an outfielder who helped lead the Crimson Tide to the College World Series. Ed was signed as an amateur free agent by the Chicago White Sox before the 1950 season and assigned to the Waterloo White Hawks of the class B Illinois-Indiana-Iowa League where he would hit at a .352 clip in his first season in professional baseball.
White would be a .300 plus hitter hitter for three straight years from 1953 to 1955 with the Memphis Chickasaws of the Southern Association. This earned him a short stay with the White Sox in 1955, picking up a pair of singles in four at-bats in three games. This would be his only time in the major leagues and Ed rejoined the Memphis club in 1956, hitting .285 with 12 home runs in 145 games and was drafted by the the New York Giants in the 1956 Rule V Draft.
White finished out his pro baseball career in 1957 with the Sacramento Solons of the Pacific Coast League and the Minneapolis Millers of the American Association hitting .247 in a combined season and decided to leave baseball at the age of 31. Ed had spent eight seasons in the minors, hitting for a career .307 average with 77 home runs and appearing in 967 games.
White became a high school teacher and coach in Lakeland, FL, where he died on September 28, 1982, at the age of 56.
