Ed Plank pitched nine games in the majors. In the minors he spent five seasons with Phoenix.

Ed, who was born in 1952, was the first major leaguer to come out of University of Nevada, Reno, where he attended in 1971-73. He was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in 1973 in the 10th round. He spent time in the rookie league and then two years at Fresno before coming to Phoenix. His minor league record overall was 72-57; from 1975 to 1977 he went 17-7, 15-10 and then 14-7. Identified as a "control artist", he became a reliever in 1978 and had 24 saves with Phoenix.

He was up in the majors for parts of 1978-79. He was a couple years younger than fellow hurler Vida Blue. Willie McCovey was still on the team, at ages 40 and 41.
