[edit] Biographical Information

Catcher Ed Phelps played eleven seasons in the National League, and appeared in the 1903 World Series. Half his career was spent with the Pittsburgh Pirates, where he was a teammate of Honus Wagner.

The book August Garry Herrmann has a chapter on "The Ed Phelps Decision". Phelps was playing for the Reds in 1905 and Herrmann put him on waivers but sold him to the Boston Red Sox before the ten days were up. Phelps, however, signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates on the tenth day. After a lot of wrangling, Herrmann gave in and Phelps joined the Pirates.

In 1930 Phelps was one of the first group of commissioners of the amateur Albany Twilight League, a league which is still in existence in 2009.
