Ed Murphy was signed as an amateur free agent by the St. Louis Cardinals before the 1937 season.
Murphy appeared in 13 games at first base in 1942 with the Philadelphia Phillies; he had seven hits in 28 at-bats. This was his only time in the major leagues.
He played 14 seasons in the minor leagues from 1937 to 1953. Ed was a lifetime .315 hitter with 122 home runs.
He served three years (1943-1945) in the United States Army during World War II.
He managed minor league baseball in seven seasons for the Philadelphia Phillies and coached the College of St. Francis baseball teams.
Edward Joseph Murphy Died December 10, 1991 at the St Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, IL at 73 years of age.
