Catcher Ed McFarland played fourteen years in the majors, mostly with the Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago White Sox. Above average in both hitting and fielding, his best year with the bat was 1899 when he hit .333. Late in his career, he was part of the champion 1906 White Sox.

McFarland, born in Cleveland, OH, broke in at age 18 with the 1893 Cleveland Spiders. Three years later he became the regular catcher for the 1896 St. Louis Browns which had five managers.

He played in 1894 with Toledo.

Ed is one of six major leaguers (through 2007) with the last name McFarland, most of whom played around 1900.

The most similar catcher (according to the similarity scores method) is contemporary Ossee Schreckengost, although McFarland was a stronger hitter.
