Ed Hengle was never a major league player, but nevertheless made his mark on the major leagues in several ways. In 1884, he managed 74 games in the Union Association of the team known as Chicago/Pittsburgh. His record was 34-39.

By 1887, he was umpiring in the National League, and sometime in the 1880's he also umpired in the Northwestern League. He also served at one point as a minor league manager in Chicago, and was a scout for the major league Chicago White Stockings. One of his recruits was Shadow Pyle, who didn't work out. Thereafter, his recruits were judged by Cap Anson, Al Spalding, and Sam Morton, a partner in Spalding's sporting goods firm. Source: Journal of the Old Timers’ Baseball Association of Chicago, 2004.
