Ed Murray and Otto Neu each were 22 years old when they played their one major league game in 1917 for the St. Louis Browns. The regular shortstop that year was Doc Lavan, age 26.

Murray, born in Connecticut, had just come out of Trinity College and appeared in June. Neu's game was in July.

Murray appeared in the 1919 American Association season opener for the Toledo Mud Hens as a shortstop, batting lead-off, on April 26th against the Minneapolis Millers at Toledo's Swayne Field. Murray batted two-for-four with one run scored, one putout and four assists, with no errors, according to the box score in the Indianapolis Star. Ralph LinWeber's compendium, The Toledo Baseball Guide of the Mud Hens (1944), lists Murray as appearing in 24 games for Toledo in 1919 and batting .180.
