Ed Mensor's father was one of 17 children, who formed a family baseball team. Ed broke in as a shortstop in the Northwestern League and was known for his range and throwing arm. Purchased by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1912, Mensor spent three years with the club, posting an 88 OPS+, derived primarily from his ability to draw walks. Using his short height to his advantage, Mensor hit .221/.367/.283 with 53 walks in 307 plate appearances. Used primarily as an outfielder with the Pirates, Mensor would later go on to play for the Oakland Oaks in 1917-1918.
