[edit] Biographical Information
Ed Lafitte pitched 14 seasons 1907 to 1919, two in college, five in the Major Leagues and nine in the minors.
He served in the U.S. Army during both World Wars (BN).
After graduating from the Georgia Institute of Technology, he pitched for the Detroit Tigers, Brooklyn Tip-Tops and Buffalo Blues from 1909 to 1915.
After an 11-8 season with the 1911 Tigers, Lafitte told manager Hughie Jennings that he wanted to leave early the following season to resume dental school. Jennings told him if he left early to keep on going. Lafitte did. He became a dentist, but also pitched in the Federal League. With the Tip-Tops, he pitched the Feds' first no-hitter, defeating the Kansas City Packers 6-2 on September 19, 1914 (walking seven), and went 16-16 with a 2.63 ERA but led the league in walks (127 in 291 innings). (NLM)
Baseball helped him earn a degree in dentistry, and he practiced dentistry 42 years in Philadelphia, PA, retiring in 1961. The Jenkintown, PA resident died at age 85 at his home and is buried at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia.
