Pitcher Dutch Weems was drafted in the 5th round of the 1969 Amateur Draft by the Baltimore Orioles (113th overall). He started his professional career in 1969 with the Northern League Aberdeen Pheasants where he went 0-3 with a 8.49 earned run average in 35 innings pitched.

In 1970, Weems pitched relief for the Stockton Ports in the California League where his ERA improved to 1.87 in 82 innings pitched. Dutch advanced rapidly and spent parts of the next three seasons at Triple-A Rochester where he compiled a 9-8 record with 4 saves and a 4.26 earned run average.

Following the 1973 season, Weems was added to the Baltimore roster, and he was expected to be a part of the O's 1974 bullpen. He was assigned to the Venezuelan Winter League where he was pitching for Magallanes. On New Year's Day of 1974, Weems, an experienced swimmer and surfer, fell victim to a strong undertow and drowned while surfing with friends in Patanemo Bay near Puerto Cabello about 94 miles west of Caracas.
