Dutch Dotterer was the son of Henry John "Dutch" Dotterer, Sr. and brother of Tom Dotterer, both minor leaguers.

Dotterer hit .247 in 299 at-bats in the major leagues. He appeared in 107 games, hitting 5 home runs and driving in 33 runs in his career.

He signed with theCincinnati Reds prior to the 1950 season and debuted in the major leagues with Cincinnati in 1957 at the age of 25. From 1957 to 1960, he appeared in 100 games for the Reds.

His most productive season came in 1959 when he appeared in 52 games and hit .267 with 2 home runs and 17 RBI.

In October of 1960, the Reds traded Dotterer to the Kansas City Athletics for Danny Kravitz. In December 1960, he was selected by the Washington Senators in the expansion draft.

His son, Mike Dotterer, was drafted by MLB clubs in three different years but decided to play professional football.
