Edgar "Dud" Branom played 30 games for the 1927 Philadelphia Athletics. All his appearances in the field were at first base.
Branom was born in Sulphur Springs, TX, east of Dallas. In a minor league career stretching at least 15 seasons, he usually hit over .300. Among other stops, he was at Kansas City seven seasons and Louisville five seasons. In 1927, his only year in the Pacific Coast League, he hit .374 for Portland.
Through 2009 the only other major leaguer given the first name "Dud" has been Dud Lee, who was in the majors just before Branom from 1920-26.
This site says that Branom began in pro ball with Enid in 1920. He came back to Enid in 1922 not only as a player, but also as field captain and business manager, and apparently had a financial interest in the team's success. The team went 104-27 that year, and the next year Branom played for another of the great minor league teams, the 1923 Kansas City Blues, a team which went 112-54.
A baseball exists that was signed by Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Dud Branom in 1927. It was apparently signed during a barnstorming tour by Ruth and Gehrig.
