Doug Holmquist played minor league baseball from 1962-1965, once hitting 16 homers in a year. He coached Sacred Heart University in 1968 and the University of Vermont from 1969 to 1971, at which point the school dropped baseball until 1978. He also started the baseball program at the Florida Technological University (1973-1975).

Holmquist managed for the New York Yankees in the minor leagues from 1978 to 1983. As the Yankees awarded World Series rings to their minor league managers as well, they gave Holmquist one. While managing in the minors, he worked with Willie McGee, Pat Tabler and Steve Balboni.

He was a New York Yankees coach in 1984 and 1985.
