Donnie Murphy was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 5th round of the 2002 amateur draft. e was signed by scout Gary Johnson and made his pro debut that summer.

Murphy was acquired by the Oakland Athletics after the 2006 season from the Royals, where he had played in the majors in 2004-05.

Murphy played for the Wichita Wranglers in 2006, although he was on the disabled list twice. He had 14 home runs with a .249 average in 94 games.

Not really known for his power - he had hit 18 homers in 7 big league seasons by that point - Murphy went on a long ball spree soon after being called up by the Chicago Cubs on August 4, 2013, after starting the year with the AAA Iowa Cubs. Starting at third base, he hit a three-run homer against Kyle Kendrick of the Philadelphia Phillies on August 6th, then added a pair of homers the next day, off Cole Hamels and Justin De Fratus, driving in four runs. The second homer came with two outs and two on in the 9th and gave the Cubs a 5-2 win over the Phillies.
