Dong-chul Cha pitched in the Korea Baseball Organization then became a college coach.

Cha debuted with the Haitai Tigers in 1986, going 10-4 with 3 saves and a 2.82 ERA. He lost game 2 of the 1986 Korean Series but saved game 3 and won game 4 to help Haitai to the title. He was 9-11 with a 3.16 ERA in 1987 and 10-6 with a save and a 3.38 ERA in 1988, tying for 9th in the league in wins. He faded to 0-4, 4.28 in 1989. He then moved to the LG Twins. He was 3-3 with a 5.51 ERA in 1990, allowed 6 runs and 9 hits in 3 2/3 IP in 1991 and rebounded to go 5-4 with four saves and a 3.20 ERA in 1993. In 1994, the righty was 2-5 with 7 saves and a 2.59 ERA. He went 4-2 with four saves and a 2.80 ERA in 1995, 1-6 with four saves and a 5.21 ERA in 48 games in 1996 and gave up 19 runs and 22 hits in 11 innings to end up in 1997. Overall, he had gone 46-46 with 27 saves and a 3.70 ERA in 323 KBO games.

Cha later coached Konkuk University and coached for South Korea in the 2011 Baseball World Cup.
