Although Dolly Gray played his entire career for two teams that were often doormats, the Philadelphia Athletics and the St. Louis Browns, the heart of his career from 1925-29 was spent on the teams that were above .500.
His best years were 1925, when he went 16-8, and 1928, when he went 20-12. From 1930 on, as his teams got worse, his records got worse also.
He was named "Dolly" after a song "Goodbye, Dolly Gray". The name was also hung on another pitcher whose name was Gray, William Denton Gray (Dolly Gray).
In 1925, he outpitched Lefty Grove, who had an ERA of 4.75, and Eddie Rommel, who had an ERA of 3.69. Gray's was 3.27.
In 1928, when he went 20-12, the star pitcher on the team was Alvin Crowder, who went 21-5. Football star Ernie Nevers was also a pitcher on the team that year.
