Dick Wiencek was a minor league player in the New York Giants and Cleveland Indians organizations as well as independent teams from 1947 to 1949. He hit .211 in 1947 as a starting shortstop in the Wisconsin State League. In '48, he missed .200 by one point (41 for 206) while appearing for two clubs. In 1949, he was 10 for 39 for the Richmond Tigers.
After breaking his ankle in 1949, he was placed on the voluntarily retired list. The following season, he began scouting for the club in the upper Midwest from his home base in Kalamazoo. Wiencek scouted for the Washington Senators/Minnesota Twins (?-1970) after his time with the Giants. He later moved to California and scouted the region for the Tigers (1975-1980), Angels (1974), A's, and Brewers. He also served in the front office for the Angels and the A's.
Wiencek counted 72 major leaguers among his signees. The most notable names are Jim Kaat for Washington, Graig Nettles and Bert Blyleven for Minnesota after the Senators' move west, Jack Morris and Alan Trammell for the Tigers, and Mark McGwire for the Athletics.
Dick Wiencek retired in 2003.
