[edit] Biographical Information

Infielder Dick Smith played 70 games in the majors over five years. He was at Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania in 1948-50, and came to the majors in 1951. He spent five seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates at a time when they were always well under .500.

In 1951 he also spent time at Charleston, hitting .330.

He had his most at-bats in 1952, the year that Dick Groat was a rookie with the team.

He is the first of three major leaguers named "Dick Smith".

In the minors, he played for teams in the South for the first few years and then became a fixture in the PCL, where he spent most of the 1950's.
